Ruckersville, VA : Pedestrian killed in a hit-and-run crash on Route 29 in Greene County on Tuesday morning, January 20, 2015
Virginia State Police are trying to find the person responsible for a fatal hit and run on Route 29 in Greene County Tuesday morning.
Officials say the Greene Co. Sheriff's Office received a call about a possible body in the northbound lanes of Route 29 around 3:50 a.m. Tuesday. Deputies found the body of a man on Route 29, near Route 607 just outside Ruckersville. State Police were called in to investigate.
Officials have not yet released the name of the victim. State Police believe the man was hit by a car that then left the scene. They say the man, who was wearing a black sweatshirt and blue jeans, was walking southbound in the northbound lanes when he was hit.
His remains have been taken to the medical examiner's office in Richmond for autopsy and identification.
Witnesses said his body was left in the road for several hours. Ryan Omohundro, who lives near the scene, said "I heard they left the body around and a lot of people I talked to seem pretty upset about that."
Omohundro says he is shocked something like this to happen in what he considers a trustworthy community. “Normally most people would pull over. It's kind of crazy to think something like that would happen around here,” he stated.
The northbound lanes of Route 29 were closed in the area until 12:30 p.m.
Virginia State Police want to hear from anyone who may have seen a white, male pedestrian wearing a black sweatshirt and blue jeans in the area between the hours of 1 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.
