Macon, GA : Wife of Crisp deputy dies after head-on I-75 wreck on Saturday, June 3, 2017
The wife of a Crisp County deputy injured in a wrong-way collision on Interstate 75 on Saturday has died, according to the sheriff.
In a Facebook post Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock identified the victim as Marci Thompson, 42, wife of Sgt. Al Thompson. He asked for prayers in a post Saturday stating that Thompson was struck head-on by a wrong-way drunk driver early Saturday morning. He said the accident happened near the border of Houston and Dooly counties. He said the couple had children.
He stated that she suffered severe injuries and burns and was flown to Augusta for treatment. On Sunday, he posted she died early Sunday.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the wreck. Sgt. Craig Smith in an email identified the other driver as Donn Kelvin Smith, 26, of Rentz. He stated that Donn Smith was traveling north in the southbound lanes in a 2013 Chrysler 200. The vehicle struck a 2016 Nissan Versa driven by Thompson. The Nissan overturned and came to a rest on its roof near the guard rail in the emergency lane, then caught fire. Donn Smith was taken to the Medical Center, Navicent Health by ambulance. His condition was not known.
Craig Smith said the crash remains under investigation.
County Fire Chief Jimmy Williams, who went to the scene, said it happened near the Henderson exit.
He said a rescue team arrived on the scene quickly, extinguished the fire and had to cut Thompson out of her vehicle. All southbound lanes were shut down while a helicopter landed at the scene to take her to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, he said. He said the other driver was taken from the scene by ambulance and Williams did not know about his condition.
