Oakland, CA : 20-year-old man arrested following fatal crash on I-580 in Oakland on Thursday morning, January 1, 2015

A Livermore man was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated after a female passenger died in a car crash early Thursday morning, authorities said.

Travis Maresca, 20, was driving a 2009 Toyota Scion around 3:20 a.m., when the vehicle crashed into a metal pole on an Interstate 580 onramp, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Officers responding to reports of the East Oakland crash found the vehicle in the roadway, blocking the MacArthur Boulevard/High Street onramp to eastbound Interstate 580.

Oakland fire paramedics pronounced the female passenger dead at the scene, Wilkenfeld said.

Authorities say they are not releasing the woman's name until her family is notified.

Authorities believe that drugs and alcohol played a role in the crash, CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said in a statement.

Maresca was taken into custody and is being held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.

The onramp was closed for more than an hour after the accident, according to the CHP.
