Hazleton, PA : Late-night crash closed I-80 in Butler Twp on Thursday, 8th September 2016
A stretch of Interstate 80 was closed after a tractor-trailer crashed late Thursday night.
Harjit S. Hans, 27, was traveling east on I-80 around 11 p.m., according to state police at Hazleton, when his tractor-trailer traveled off the left shoulder and hit the end of a guardrail at mile marker 260.6 in Butler Township.
The commercial vehicle flipped over and stopped in the left lane of the highway on its driver’s side, a press release states. The trailer broke into several pieces, troopers said, with the majority of the trailer and cargo landing in the left lane and parts of both landing in the center median.
About 200 gallons of diesel fuel spilled when the truck overturned, resulting in a portion of I-80 being closed to traffic for cleanup of debris and fuel from the time of the crash until about 6:15 a.m. today.
Hans suffered minor to moderate injuries, according to police, who did not indicate in the release whether he was taken to a hospital.
The investigation into the crash continues.
While the tractor-trailer was overturned in the left lane a sport utility vehicle hit the rear end of the trailer, troopers said, causing minor damage to the SUV, which was able to be driven away. The occupants of the SUV were wearing seatbelts and were not injured.
