A Wessington springs man who sustained serious, life-threatening injuries was identified Monday morning as the third person involved in a fatal crash last week.
Scott Wenzel, 52, was driving a semi involved in a two-vehicle crash Thursday west of Wessington Springs, according to the Department of Public Safety.
Wenzel was transported to a Wessington Springs hospital and later airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital. The two victims, identified as 75-year-old Donald Wetzel and 30-year-old Matthew Wetzel, were pronounced dead on scene.
According to a press release from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the Wetzels died when the Ford F-350 they were in crossed the center line and collided with a 2005 International 8000 semi truck, driven by Wenzel, on South Dakota Highway 34.
Authorities said the pickup entered the south ditch and started on fire.
A 10:30 a.m. memorial service will be held for the Wetzel relatives on Tuesday at the Foothills Bible Fellowship Church in Wessington Springs.
Visitation for the Wetzels will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the Foothills Bible Fellowship Church, with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m. The Rev. Scott Spiehs will officiate Tuesday’s memorial service.
