The coroner has identified the man killed in a collision involving a minivan and pick-up truck in Cherokee County after one of the drivers fell asleep at the wheel on Saturday.

According to troopers, the crash occurred on SC Hwy 5 and Jumping Branch Road, approximately 1.87 miles east of Blacksburg. The call came came in around 7:09 a.m.

According to troopers, an 18-year-old in a 2012 Ford F150 truck was traveling south on SC 5 as a driver in a 1999 Dodge minivan was traveling north on the same road. The 18-year-old driver reportedly then crossed over the center line and struck the minivan.

The coroner later reported that the teen had fallen asleep at the wheel before crossing over the divided median of the four-lane highway and striking the minivan.

The teen driver was wearing a seat belt during the crash and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The driver of the minivan, however, was not wearing a seat belt during the crash and became entrapped in the vehicle. Troopers said the driver needed to be extricated from the minivan, but ultimately succumbed to injuries at the scene.

The coroner identified the victim as 55-year-old Gilberto Aguilar of York. Two female passengers in the minivan were transported to a local hospital for treatment. They were wearing seat belts.

There is no word on either of their conditions at this time.

The coroner will conduct an autopsy to assist with investigations of the fatal crash.
