Bakersfield, CA : Fresno County man dead in Kern highway crash early Thursday, JULY 7, 2016
A Fresno County man died early Thursday on Interstate 5 in Kern County, in a three-vehicle accident that injured another man from Fresno, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident at around 5 a.m. occurred when a Volvo semi tractor driven by Joseph K. Boakye, 49, of San Bernardino allegedly veered onto the right freeway shoulder of southbound Interstate 5 south of Sabodan Road, CHP Officer Justin Montooth confirmed.
The subsequent crash fatally injured a 39-year-old Tranquility man and injured Fresno resident Jose Antonio Roa, 27, according to the CHP.
The accident, which occurred as the two men were refueling the Tranquility man’s Jeep Cherokee which had run out of gas, also damaged Roa’s Nissan Maxima.
The man from Tranquility was pronounced dead at the scene by the Kern County Fire Department.
The CHP withheld his identity pending notification of his next of kin.
Roa was taken to Kern Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries to his left leg.
Boakye was uninjured in the crash and neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be factors in the crash, but the incident remains under investigation, Montooth said.
