Chicago, IL : Wrong-way driver causes head-on crash on Hwy. 14 on Sunday, 15th November, 2020

No one was seriously injured in a crash Sunday evening after a vehicle traveling the wrong way hit another head on, according to the Rochester Police Department.

Officers were called about 5:20 p.m. Sunday to the 2600 block of U.S. Highway 14 East for a report of a two-vehicle crash.

A 2003 Chevy Tahoe was eastbound in the westbound lanes of traffic when it hit a 2011 GMC Acadia head on, according to Rochester police Capt. Casey Moilanen. The speed limit on that portion of the road is 55 mph.

A witness said that when the vehicles hit each other "they just blew up from the impact," Moilanen said.

The driver of the GMC Acadia, a 35-year-old Mazeppa woman, and one of her passengers, an 8-year-old boy, were taken by ambulance Mayo Clinic Hospital-Saint Marys for non-life threatening injuries. He was cited for driving the wrong way and having no proof of insurance.

All four people were wearing seat belts at the time.

Moilanen said it is believed the Rochester man did not cross the center median, but had turned into the eastbound lanes when trying to enter the highway from an intersection further east of the crash site.
