Boonsboro, MD : Frederick man killed in a three-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer on I-70 in Washington County on Wednesday night, March 16, 2016
A Frederick, Md., man was killed Wednesday night in a crash with a tractor-trailer on westbound Interstate 70 in Washington County near the Frederick County line, according to a press release from Maryland State Police.
Guillermo Rodriguez, 67, died when a tractor-trailer rolled on top of the 1997 Toyota Avalon he was driving around the 37-mile marker descending South Mountain, the release said.
According to the release, Rodriguez's vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway for unknown reasons and struck the guardrail, sending the car back onto the highway.
Rodriguez's car struck a 2012 Chrysler traveling in the right lane, which sent Rodriguez's vehicle to the left again, police said.
The tractor-trailer, driven by Kenneth Wentz, 57, of Great Cacapon, W.Va., was traveling in the left lane. Wentz tried to avoid Rodriguez's vehicle by swerving left. The tractor-trailer traveled off the road and up the embankment before rolling onto its right side on top of the Toyota, police said.
Rodriguez did not survive the collision. Wentz was transported to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, the release said.
A Meritus spokeswoman said Wentz was no longer listed as a patient Thursday morning.
The driver of the Chrysler, Dwaine Branch, 58, of Martinsburg, W.Va., was not injured in the incident, police said.
The westbound lanes of the interstate were shut down, and authorities were diverting traffic off the interstate at the Myersville exit, a Washington County 911 supervisor said.
State police said all lanes of traffic were reopened at about 4:30 a.m. Thursday.
Dispatchers started getting calls about the crash at about 9:50 p.m.
