Huntsville, TX : 2 killed in three-vehicle accident on I-45 on Tuesday, 10th April 2018
Two people were killed following a three-vehicle accident involving a Megabus on the freeway in New Waverly on Tuesday afternoon.
The accident happened at approximately 2:30 p.m. when a red Kia Sorento traveling north on Interstate 45 crossed over into the southbound lanes and hit a silver Chevrolet Malibu, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The impact pushed the Malibu in front of an oncoming Megabus and caused those two vehicles to collide.
The drivers of both the Sorento and Malibu were trapped inside their mangled vehicles and had to be extracted by members of the New Waverly Fire Department and Walker County Emergency Medical Services.
The female driver of the Malibu, 50-year-old Alvin resident Praxeles Morales, suffered critical injuries and was transported by Life Flight to a Houston area hospital. She passed away Tuesday afternoon as a result of her injuries, according to DPS.
The male driver of the Sorento died at the scene. He has been identified as 29-year-old Nahun Ortiz of Houston.
"The Kia was already rolling when it went across the median and broke through the wire cables between the lanes," Sgt. Steven McNeil with the Department of Public Safety said. "It struck the Malibu, which caused it to skid and get T-boned by the bus. We are still investigating what caused this accident."
Four people on the Megabus, which was traveling from Dallas to Houston with more than 70 passengers, were transported by ambulance to an area hospital with nonlife threatening injuries.
McNeil said a fourth vehicle suffered damage as a result of being struck by the wire cables when the Sorento crashed through the guard rail. The driver was not injured.
