Loveland, CO : Fort Collins High School science teacher and a Longmont High School science teacher killed in a single vehicle rollover crash near Loveland on Friday night, September 16, 2016
A Fort Collins High School science teacher and a Longmont High School science teacher were killed in a single vehicle rollover crash near Loveland on Friday night.
Colorado State Trooper Alisha Danko said that Sommervold, 34, and Genevieve Sommervold, 30, both of Johnstown, died at the scene of the crash near mile marker 256 of Interstate 25 at about 9:19 p.m. on Friday.
The Sommervolds, along with a 2-year-old child, were in a 2007 gold Lexus SUV, driving southbound on I-25 in the left lane, according to Danko, when it appears the driver drove off the right side of the road “for an unknown reason,” overcorrected and rolled the vehicle nearly twice.
Both Genevieve and Jared Sommervold were pronounced dead at the scene. Neither was wearing a seat belt, Danko said. The child did not suffer any major injuries.
“The minor child was properly restrained in a passenger safety seat,” Danko said, adding that the child was in a forward-facing car seat.
She said drugs, alcohol and speed are not considered factors.
Danko said police aren’t sure who was driving because both of the adults were ejected.
The Larimer County Coroner’s Office identified the pair as husband and wife and determined the manner of death an accident and the cause as multiple blunt force injuries Saturday.
Emails were sent out to parents in both Poudre and St. Vrain school districts informing them of the tragedy and alerting them to the availability of counselors and trauma response teams Monday.
St. Vrain Valley School District spokesman Damon Brown confirmed on Saturday that Jared Sommervold was one of the two people killed.
“Mr. Sommervold was a beloved teacher and coach at Longmont High,” read an email from Principal Rick Olsen on Saturday. “He made a considerable impact on many students and staff in his five year tenure.”
Jared Sommervold taught science and held degrees in kinesiology and physics education from the University of Colorado and Western Governors University.
According to the Poudre School District website, Genevieve Sommervold taught chemistry and biology.
Students were expressing their condolences on Twitter on Saturday.
Friday night’s incident marks the second time in less than a month a teacher at the St. Vrain School District has died in an accident. Earlier in September, Longs Peak Middle School teacher Matthew Barz died after falling from his cliffside campground in Pitkin County.
