Portland, OR : DUII suspect driving with 5 kids hits SE Portland home on Monday morning, April 20, 2015
Police suspect a father was driving under the influence with his wife and kids inside the minivan Monday morning when he missed a curve in the road and crashed into the side of a Southeast Portland house.
Arlen Pugh, 38, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was later cited for driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving and reckless endangerment.
His wife and five children, ages 1 to 18, were also in the van; none of them were hurt in the crash.
According to police, Pugh was heading east on Woodstock Court when around 6 a.m. Monday he missed a curve in the road, crossed Foster Road, and hit the side of a house.
There was significant damage to the outside of the home; however, no one inside was hurt. The van was totaled and towed away.
The Portland Bureau of Transportation says the area has been deemed a high-crash corridor, and plans are already in the works to make changes to the roads here to make it safer.
It is part of an overall project called "The Foster Streetscape Project," that will get underway next year.
Editor's note: An earlier version of this story said police thought alcohol may have played a role in the crash. Officials later said Pugh was suspected to have been on drugs.
