Orlando, FL : Woman dead, pedestrian injured after crash in East Colonial Drive on Saturday afternoon, February 21, 2015
The Orlando police and fire departments are investigating a fatal crash on E. Colonial Drive near Shine Avenue that happened just after 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Police said the driver, who died, suffered a medical condition and crashed his black PT Cruiser into the wall of a beauty supply store.
“PT Cruiser came flying up the southbound lane, cut across on a diagonal,” said witness Christopher Boyden.
The driver struck a woman on the sidewalk, who was taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition.
“It was horrible. She got thrown into the air and landed on her head,” Boyden said.
He said he saw the whole crash unfold and that it’s something he’ll likely never forget.
“She couldn’t get out of the way and the guy hit her,” Boyden said.
Crime scene investigators spent the afternoon mapping out and recreating the crash.
Witnesses told police the driver had just left Publix and suffered some kind of medical episode.
“The car came out of the Publix parking lot, hit the Publix wall and continued northbound on Shine,” said Lt. Jim Young, of the Orlando Police Department.
The driver died on the scene while bystanders rushed to try and save the pedestrian’s life.
“Someone took their shirt off to try to control the bleeding, make sure her neck wasn’t broken, make sure she was breathing,” said witness Marselis Pratt.
The crash shut down E. Colonial Drive in both directions between Fern Creek and Mills avenues for several hours, but the road reopened about 4 p.m.
The names victims have not been released.
