Mentor, OH : Driver of 1960s Chevy Nova flown from violent Mentor crash on Sunday, July 10, 2016

Mentor police are investigating a one-car crash that sent the driver of a 1960s Chevrolet Nova to MetroHealth Medical Center by helicopter.

Mentor police said the call for the crash on Carolyn Drive just south of Tina Drive came in around 11:30 p.m. Sunday and that the driver was the only person inside the car when it struck a utility pole.

The crash was so severe that the steering wheel was laying in the grass next to the Nova's passenger door.

A resident of Carolyn Drive told newsnet5.com he heard the car coming from near Munson Road at a high speed and then heard the crash.

Two other residents said it's not uncommon for people to use the dead-end stretch of road as sort of a drag strip to race motorcycles and other vehicles.

Neighbors believed the owner of the car lived on Carolyn Drive and said he rarely had the Nova out of the garage.

No information about the condition of the driver was released.
