NEEDLES, AZ : California man died night after suffering injuries in a head-on vehicle collision on Sunday, November, 19th 2017
A California man died Sunday night after suffering injuries in a head-on vehicle collision on Needles Highway near the Nevada-California state line.
Avetis Karamusan, 65, of Canyon Country, was taken to Valley View Medical Center in Fort Mohave, where he later died, said Officer Joseph Medina, California Highway Patrol Needles Area public information officer.
Driver of the 2017 Toyota involved in the crash, Joey Karamusan, 42, of Canyon Country, suffered major broken bones and was taken by ambulance to VVMC. Avetis Karamusan was an unrestrained passenger in Joey Karamusan’s vehicle. One other passenger in the Toyota suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to VVMC.
Rudy Butler, 30, of Apple Valley, Calif., driver of the 2017 Nissan involved in the collision, was taken to VVMC with moderate injuries, Medina said. Three passengers from Butler’s vehicle were flown with non-life threatening injuries to Sunrise Medical Center in Las Vegas.
CHP officers responded to reports of a collision about 6 p.m. PST on Sunday, about 1.8 miles south of Aha Macav Parkway on Needles Highway, Medina said.
Joey Karamusan’s Toyota was traversing a curve heading southbound on the highway, Medina said. Butler was driving his 2017 Nissan northbound on Needles Highway, just south of Karamusan’s Toyota.
The Toyota travelled out of the southbound lane and into the northbound lane. An unknown vehicle also traveling northbound on Needles Highway directly ahead of the Nissan swerved left to avoid a collision. Butler steered the Nissan onto the east shoulder of Needles Highway but could not avoid a collision with the Toyota, as Karamusan had also steered onto the east shoulder.
Emergency crews worked to extricate occupants of Nissan from the vehicle, officials said.
San Bernardino County Sheriffs deputies, along with two engines, six ambulances and three helicopters and crews from San Bernardino County, Mohave Valley, Fort Mojave Mesa and Bullhead City fire departments also responded to provide assistance.
