Fontana, CA : 13-year-old boy dead after crash between bicycle and vehicle in Fontana on Monday, 11th March 2019

A 13-year-old boy died after a crash involving a bicycle and vehicle in Fontana on Monday afternoon.

Gabriel Morales, spokesman for the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office, said the boy, a Fontana resident, was on a bicycle near Merrill and Hemlock avenues when the crash happened just before 1 p.m.

The California Highway Patrol said in a press release that the boy was riding his bicycle west on Merrill Avenue, partially in the eastbound lanes of traffic, just east of Hemlock Avenue. The boy lost control of the bike, and fell into the roadway.

He fell into the path of a Chevrolet Cavalier, which crashed into him, according to the CHP. That Cavalier was being driven by a Fontana woman.

“According to the woman, she saw the boy fall into the path of her vehicle as she was about to pass by him,” the CHP said.

The CHP said the woman tried to steer away from the boy, but hit him with the rear right side of her car.

The boy was transported to a hospital in Loma Linda, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:39 p.m., Morales said.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
