Police say a popular St. Petersburg chef has died after being hit by a drunken driver while walking home from work to see his wife, who is due to give birth this week.
St. Petersburg police say they tried to make a DUI stop early Saturday on 25-year-old Jason Mitchell. Authorities said he ran several red lights before striking Aaron Davis and his co-worker Brian Lee LaFrance. Davis died at the scene and LaFrance had non life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said Mitchell tried to escape from police headquarters while undergoing a breath test. The Tampa Bay Times (http://tinyurl.com/jwwotbr) reports he faces charges of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, aggravated fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of a crash involving a death and DUI serious bodily injury.
Jail records show Mitchell has a history of arrests for grand theft auto, fleeing police and drug possession.
