Salt Lake City, UT : 28-year-old man killed after a vehicle involved in a collision at a Salt Lake on Wednesday, May 11, 2016
A man died Wednesday after a truck ran a red light and struck his car in a Salt Lake intersection, police said.
The crash occurred at 1700 South and 900 West about 2 p.m. when a northbound pickup truck ran a red light, hitting an eastbound Plymouth Neon, Salt Lake police detective Cody Lougy said.
Marcus Ortega, 28, of Salt Lake City, later died at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. Ortega was in the front passenger seat and was "at the point of impact," according to Salt Lake Police Lt. John Beener.
Beener said Ortega's 5-year-old daughter was also a passenger in the Neon. She suffered minor injuries. Another adult — believed to be an extended family member — was driving, he said.
The driver of the truck, a 23-year-old man, was taken to a hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Lougy said. A passenger in the truck was also taken to a hospital. Their conditions were stable Wednesday evening.
The truck driver's name was not immediately released. Police didn't know Wednesday what citations or charges might be pursued against him.
Video surveillance from a nearby 7–Eleven shows the truck going through the red light at 1700 South, according to Lougy. The detective said there was no initial indication that drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.
Investigators were still trying to determine the truck's speed Wednesday evening.
