Traffic was held up at Cairo Junction for less than an hour Wednesday following a three-vehicle crash that left one woman with non-life threatening injuries.
At 3:30 p.m. Oregon State Police responded to the crash at the intersection of Hwy 201 and U.S 20/26, also known as Cairo Junction.
Mina Bender, 87, of Vale, was driving north on Hwy 201 in a 2001 Dodge Stratus when she began to take the junction’s route towards Vale. Bender reportedly lost control of her vehicle and slid into the oncoming lane of travel, according to an Oregon State Police news release.
Her vehicle then collided head-on with a commercial vehicle that was traveling westbound on U.S. 20/26, driven by William Smith, of Nampa.
Bender’s vehicle then spun out of control toward the eastbound shoulder where she collided with another commercial vehicle, driven by Carlos Rivers. The commercial truck was parked in the shoulder due to equipment issues.
Bender’s vehicle continued off the roadway, where it came to rest on the eastbound shoulder of U.S. 20/26.
Treasure Valley Paramedics and Ontario Fire and Rescue responded to the scene to remove the elderly woman from her car. She was then transported to Saint Alphonsus Medical Center-Ontario with non-life threatening injuries.
Malheur County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon Department of Transportation were
also on scene for traffic control.
Both semi drivers were uninjured in the crash.
