Tifton, GA : Two dead in a wreck on Thursday, December 29, 2016
Details about the fatal accident on US 82/GA 520 at approximately 2:30 p.m. Dec. 29. that claimed the lives of two people have emerged.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, a Hyundai Accent that was traveling west on 82 failed to maintain its lane and crossed over into the inside eastbound lane.
The Accent made an almost direct head on collision with an International semi truck that was traveling in the inside lane heading east towards Tifton.
The Accent became lodged under the semi and was pushed farther down the road.
The Accent and the cab of the semi caught fire and were engulfed in flames after they came to a stop.
According to Georgia State Trooper Ryan Harding who was on the scene, the flames burned hot enough to melt the license plate.
The car was only identified because of an insurance card that flew out of the Accent during the accident.
Both the driver and the passenger in the Accent were killed. The driver of the semi truck made it out of the cab with no injuries.
A third vehicle, a Honda Odyssey traveling east on 82 beside the semi, was covered in oil and fluids, obscuring the driver’s vision and causing them to veer off the road.
No one in the Odyssey was injured.
Harding said that there is probably no way to know what caused the driver of the Accent to veer into the eastbound lane, but said that it looked to him like they were trying to turn onto Salem Church Road but turned too early, putting them in the path of the semi.
Names of the victims will be released as soon as the next of kin have been notified.
