Roanoke Rapids, N.C : One dead after wreck off I-95 on Thursday, March 16, 2017

A man is dead after a car wreck required his passenger and he to be extricated from the vehicle with the jaws of life Thursday night.

The two were flown in separate helicopters to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. The man, who was driving the GMC Terrain SUV, died at the hospital, said Paul Nowell, North Hampton County's medical examiner.

Nowell did not identify the man pending notification of next of kin.

Gaston Fire & Rescue was dispatched at 6:50 p.m., Thursday, off Interstate 95 around mile marker 180 for a motor vehicle accident with entrapment.

Fire and rescue found the SUV in a wood line between the interstate and the off-ramp. The vehicle had heavy damage, while an exit sign was noted as being dislodged from the ground, officials report.

Both the man and the woman were found trapped inside of the vehicle. The Terrain was stabilized and the roof was removed using hydraulic rescue cutters, officials report. The passenger's dash was rolled up using the hydraulic jaws of life. Once both were removed from the vehicle, they were flown away from the scene in critical condition.

No additional information was available on the condition of the passenger.

NC Highway Patrol is leading the accident investigation.
