Broad Brook,CT : Bronx couple badly hurt in fiery I-95 crash on December, Saturday 23rd 2017
When Alwin Martinez looked down, his legs were mangled and his girlfriend was trapped beneath a burning car.
The Bronx couple, recovering Saturday in side-by-side hospital beds from a horrifying Dec. 13 wreck on Interstate 95, are grateful to celebrate the holidays after cheating death.
Martinez, 27, and girlfriend Yesenia Camacho, 28, were standing on the highway shoulder trying to jump-start his dead battery when a tractor-trailer plowed into one of their vehicles.
“I was on the ground and I saw my legs explode,” recalled Martinez. “I saw her pinned under the car. It was the worst experience of my life.”
The seriously injured Camacho, at different times after the fiery wreck, thought both she and Martinez were killed in those gruesome seconds on a curved section of the highway.
“I remember being in and out of pain and seeing the car on fire,” said Camacho. “I saw him next to the car and thought he was dead.”
The night began with no hint of impending horror as Martinez drove home to the Bronx from Connecticut, only to find himself stuck on the side of the highway after his SUV conked out in Mamaroneck, Westchester County. The stranded Martinez called Camacho for help, and she drove up in a Toyota belonging to her boyfriend’s brother, parking in the right lane of the highway about 1 a.m., according to a CBS News report.
