Daytona Beach , FL : 27-year-old Person was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Volusia County on early Sunday , january 18th 2015
A family is pleading for answers after their 27-year-old nephew was killed in a hit-and-run crash early Sunday in Volusia County.
Denzil D. Sykes, of Daytona Beach, was killed at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard and South Street, in Daytona Beach, around 12:46 a.m. Sunday, according to a police report.
A driver of a 2003 black Mercedes was traveling southbound on Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard at a high rate of speed, police said.
The Mercedes then slammed into the back of Sykes' 2006 Toyota Corolla as the man was stopped at a red light. The driver of the Mercedes got out of the vehicle and fled the scene, police said.
Sykes died at the scene of the crash.
Now, his family members are hoping for answers.
"I mean, we just saw him, we just talked to him," Denzil Sykes' aunt, Paula Reed, said Sunday afternoon. "We see him every day, he is very family oriented. So, for life to be lost so quickly, for him to be so young ... of course anyone would be devastated."
Confused and upset just hours after the deadly crash, family members said they are holding onto Denzil Sykes' memories. One of those memories was the man's laugh.
"It was very contagious," Reed said. "And his spirit was so lively. He was always willing to hug. His spirit will always be with us."
Family members said Sykes was juggling time between work and school. They are pleading for the driver of the Mercedes to come forward so the family can have some peace.
"You obviously know that something happened," Reed said. "You may not have known that you killed somebody, but by now you should know. And by now, you should have the conviction — you should stand up and tell people who you are and stand for what's right."
Police said the deadly crash remains under investigation.
