Monroe, GA : Student, aide hurt in crash on Monday, November 13th 2016
A student and schools employee from Walton County were being taken to an Athens hospital Monday morning after a crash involving their bus.
The Walton County School District bus was involved in the two-car collision at Monroe Highway (U.S. 78) near Lenru Road in the Bogart area, according to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office. State troopers said a driver rear-ended the bus.
Callen Moore, the school district’s public relations officer, said the bus was en route to Rutland Academy in Athens. The student and a bus monitor sustained minor injuries and were being taken to Piedmont Athens Regional.
The number of students on the bus was not immediately available.
Tracey Watson of the Georgia Department of Public Safety said the school bus was stopped in traffic on Monroe Highway when a Ford Fusion driven by 58-year-old Lisa Glam stopped behind the bus.
Glam allegedly accelerated and struck the rear of the bus with the front of her car.
The 13-year-old student and 54-year-old aide complained of minor injuries, Watson said.
Troopers issued Glam a warning for allegedly following too closely.
Rutland Academy is a member of the Georgia Network of Educational and Therapeutic Support, a program serving students with emotional and behavioral disorders. The school on Oglethorpe Avenue in Athens serves students in 13 school districts including Walton County and Social Circle.
