Wilmington police have identified the woman killed in a near head-on crash at the intersection of Shipyard and Independence boulevards Tuesday night as Maria Cruz, 49.
Cruz, of Wilmington, was a back-seat passenger in a car that collided with another vehicle in the intersection at around 9 p.m., according to a spokesperson for the Wilmington Police Department.
“The vehicle she was riding in turned in front of an SUV while it was travelling through the intersection,” the spokesperson said. “Investigators say the driver of the vehicle the victim was riding in failed to yield the right of way.
Cruz, who was reportedly not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.
Four others, including two children, were taken to the hospital following the wreck.
No charges have been filed at this time.
The westbound lane on Shipyard Boulevard from Long Street to Independence Boulevard was temporarily closed while crews were on scene. It reopened just before 11:30 p.m.
