Meacham, OR : Woman dies after SUV veers off freeway on Thursday afternoon, May 29, 2014

A 76-year-old woman died when her SUV went off Interstate 84 and crashed on an embankment Thursday afternoon near Meacham.

Barbara May Nash of Pendleton, Ore., died at the scene.

State police said Nash was driving eastbound when her SUV drifted onto the right shoulder. She had just passed another vehicle using the left lane, according to witnesses.

The SUV continued onto the gravel next to the freeway for over 400 feet before going up an embankment and crashing into a guardrail, police said.

It’s unclear what caused Nash’s SUV to go off the freeway or if she was wearing a seat belt.
