HOLIDAY, FL : Wrong-way driver causes head-on crash on U.S. 19 on Wednesday, 2nd May 2018
The Florida Highway Patrol arrested a 20-year-old man on charges that he drove the wrong way on U.S. 19 and crashed head-on into another vehicle early Wednesday morning.
Rashad Xavier Wesley, of New Port Richey, faces charges of driving under the influence involving serious injury and drugs and traveling in the wrong direction on a divided highway, according to the FHP.
The crash took place at about 7:20 a.m. Wesley was driving a 2001 Lexus sedan north on U.S. 19, approaching Darlington Road.
James Swope, 63, of Holiday, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet that was stopped in the southbound left turn lane of U.S. 19. When Wesley entered the intersection, the FHP said, his car suddenly started driving north into southbound U.S. 19. Then Wesley’s car crashed head-on into Swope’s car.
Both drivers were wearing their seat belts and both were taken to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point for medical treatment. Swope suffered serious injuries in the crash and Wesley suffered minor injuries.
Troopers later arrested Wesley, the agency said, but his jail status was unknown late Wednesday.
