ELKHART, IL : Wrong-way driver dies in crash on I-55 near Elkhart on Thursday, February 2nd 2017

A 32-year-old Springfield man who police said was driving the wrong direction on Interstate 55 died early Thursday when his truck crashed into a tractor-trailer.

Jeremiah D. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by the Logan County coroner.

Illinois State Police said the crash was reported at 12:02 a.m. Thursday at mile marker 113, which is about 2 miles south of the Elkhart exit.

Police said Smith was driving a 2001 Ford truck southbound in the northbound lanes at a high rate of speed when it hit the tractor-trailer head-on.

The driver of the semi, Deon Johnson, 45, of Toledo, Ohio, was not injured.
