A 47-year-old local man died as the result of a single-vehicle crash on Colorado 96, 14 miles east of here Tuesday afternoon.
According to Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Scott Hophan, the victim was identified as Derek Pierre of Westcliffe. Pierre was driving west on Colorado 96 in a 2010 pickup that was pulling a flatbed trailer when he encountered slush on the roadway which caused the trailer to jackknife.
The pickup rotated counterclockwise, crossed the eastbound lane, went off the side of the highway and down an embankment where it rolled onto its top.
Pierre was not wearing a seat belt and was killed in the 3: 44 p.m. crash. One passenger was ejected and he was transported to Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo for treatment of moderate injuries.
Three other occupants, including a 17-year-old boy, were treated on scene for minor injuries. Neither alcohol consumption nor excessive speed are suspected as factors in the crash, Hophan said.
