Walthall County, MS : Woman and One year-old baby killed in Walthall County fatal crash on Sunday afternoon, July 20, 2014

A woman and her 12-month-old baby were killed in a car crash on Sunday afternoon.

At around 2:30 pm, Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to the two vehicle fatal collision.

The crash happened on MS 27 about 1.5 miles north of US 98 in Walthall County.

The collision involved a Chevrolet Impala, driven by 26-year-old Gena C. Smith of Ruth, and a Chevrolet pickup, driven by 17-year-old Ross M. Bailey also of Ruth.

According to MHP the Impala was headed southbound on MS 27 and the pickup was northbound.

The Impala, driven by Smith, crossed into the northbound lane of traffic and collided head-on with Bailey's pickup.

Troopers say that Smith was not wearing a seatbelt and she had to be extricated with the Jaws of Life. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

A passenger and Smith's 12-month-old daughter were taken to Walthall General Hospital.

Smith's 12-month-old daughter, who was strapped in a car seat at the time of the crash, died from her injuries.

Bailey was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries. MHP says he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

The crash is still under investigation by MHP.
