Tilton, IL : Driver died in 3-vehicle crash on Illinois 1 in Vermilion County on Tuesday, May 3, 2016
A three-vehicle accident along Illinois 1 on Tuesday has claimed the life of a 27-year-old man, according to Illinois state police.
Authorities are not yet releasing the name of the man who was driving a blue Chevrolet Cavalier that struck a Mack garbage truck head on Illinois 1 just south of Ross Lane in Tilton. Police said authorities are still notifying relatives of the deceased.
The accident happened at 1:37 p.m. Tuesday, according to state police, when the southbound Cavalier tried to switch from the right southbound lane to the left southbound lane and clipped the front-corner of a GMC pick up truck, driven by 36-year-old Shawn Silva of Westville.
The contact caused the driver of the Cavalier to lose control and slide across the center turn lane and into the northbound lane where the car collided head-on with the garbage truck. Both vehicles came to rest in the center turn lane, reducing traffic on the five-lane highway to one lane in each direction for hours on Tuesday afternoon. The driver of the Cavalier was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police.
The driver of the garbage truck, Christopher Ratliff, 29, of Danville, was rushed to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
