BELLEVILLE, IL : Wrong-way driver kills 2 in Belleville crash on Saturday, July 8, 2017

Two men were killed when their car was hit by a pickup truck heading the wrong way on Illinois Route 15 at Frank Scott Parkway early Saturday morning, authorities said.

A man driving the pickup was injured and taken to a hospital. His condition was not available.

St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. said the car's driver, John P. Bannister, 37, was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene, as was a passenger, Daryl E. Harton, 36.

Both resided in the 300 block of West Main Street in Belleville. They each were wearing seat belts.

Dye said the pickup truck, driven by Kevin Helfrich, 54, was westbound on eastbound Route 15 when it crashed into the car, a Kia. Helfrich's address was not released. Court records show he has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol multiple times, the most recent a pending case from Centreville.

Belleville police were investigating the crash, which took place about 12:45 a.m.
