Martinsburg, W.V : Amid Hafley, 23, man charged with DUI following fatal I-81 crash on Thursday, June 16, 2016

A Martinsburg man has been charged with driving under the influence after he allegedly caused an accident Thursday on Interstate 81 that killed one man and sent 13 others to area hospitals, West Virginia State Police said.

Amid Hafley, 23, is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance and driving under the influence causing death, according to a news release from state police.
Troopers allege Hafley caused the accident that killed Caleb David Conner, 24, of Falling Waters, W.Va.
The crash happened shortly before 5 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-81 north of Martinsburg.
Police said Hafley was driving a 2002 Acura when the vehicle collided with the side of a tractor-trailer and spun out of control.

Vehicles approaching the accident then slowed down, which caused further collisions involving two tractor-trailers and 14 passenger vehicles, the release said.

Troopers said Conner died at the scene from injuries he suffered when his 2002 Ford Escort was struck by a tractor-trailer driven by 29-year-old Brooks Horting of Newport, Pa.

An investigation showed Hafley was driving under the influence when the crash occurred, police said.
Thirteen people were taken to Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg or Meritus Medical Center east of Hagerstown to be treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, the release said.

The interstate was closed for nearly five hours while rescue workers responded to the scene, police said.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Berkeley County EMS and Berkeley County Fire & Rescue assisted state police.
