Fair Oaks, CA : One person killed in vehicle hit a tree near Madison on Friday February 12 2016
A man was killed Friday morning when the vehicle he was driving hit a tree and ended up on its back end, officials said.
The crash happened about 8:40 a.m. on Winding Oak Drive and Windsock Avenue, near Madison Avenue, according to the Metro Fire Department.
The driver, identified as Leonard Moreno, 58, of Orangevale, was driving his 2012 Nissan XTerra south on Winding Oak Drive likely much faster than the posted 25 mph speed limit, the California Highway Patrol said. Witnesses told officers they estimated Moreno was going between 65 and 70 mph.
As Moreno drove up to the intersection, he came upon a sweeping curve to the left and, because of his excessive speed, was unable to make the curve, the CHP said.
The Nissan left the west edge of the road, hitting several garbage cans and a transformer box. It then continued south away from the road, where it went onto a yard with large landscaping rocks. The front of the Nissan hit the rocks, causing the vehicle to roll and become momentarily airborne. The SUV then tumbled across Windsock Avenue and into the front yard of a home, hitting a stop sign and rolling up the elevated landscape and up against a tree, the CHP said.
The edge of the roof at the northeast corner of the home was hit as well.
Officials also said there was a strong odor of alcohol inside the vehicle, leading them to believe alcohol played a factor in the crash.
