OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC : Wilmington man charged in fatal Brunswick crash on February, Friday 16th 2018
Ocean Island Beach, North Carolina
A Wilmington man has been charged in connection with a crash Friday near Ocean Isle Beach that left three locals dead.
N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Corey Blackwell said the crash happened around 8 p.m. Friday on U.S. 17 near N.C. 904/Seaside Road. Blackwell said a pickup truck driven by Michael Anthony Johnson, 31, of Wilmington, was travelling south on U.S. 17 when it swerved into the left-hand turning lane, rear-ending a van. The truck reportedly pushed the van into northbound traffic, where it collided with two more cars.
Blackwell said Frances and Leroy Carlisle, both 82, of Brunswick County, were killed; the couple had been in the van. Penny Pigford, 59, of Wilmington, also died of her injuries after being transported to the hospital. Blackwell said three other people were also injured in the wreck.
Johnson has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle, Blackwell said, and more charges are pending.
Blackwell said an investigation into the cause of the wreck is ongoing, but alcohol is suspected as a factor. Johnson was taken to Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, and will be extradited back to North Carolina, according to Blackwell.
