A man was killed and three people were hurt early Monday in a crash involving a car that was traveling in the opposite lane while attempting to pass another vehicle, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.
According to the FHP, Shelby Robinson, 23, of Punta Gorda was driving a Ford Excursion west on Bermont Road (County Road 74) near State Road 31 at about 7:30 a.m. when she drove into the opposite lane to pass another vehicle.Gerald Shipman, 60, of Lehigh Acres, who was driving a Chrysler Voyager east at that time, drove onto the grassy shoulder to avoid Robinson, the FHP reports. The front of the Ford struck the front left of the Chrysler, which rotated and traveled backward into a ditch.
Shipman, who was wearing a seatbelt, was fatally injured, FHP reports. Robinson, who was wearing a seatbelt, received serious injuries and was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital. A 3-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy who were in Robinson's vehicle in child restraints were taken to Lee Memorial with minor injuries, FHP says.
