Panhandle,TX: 90-Year old teacher killed in a Car accident on Highway- 60 on Wednesday evening, 5th November 2014
A man whose coaching and teaching left a lasting mark on students across the Panhandle has been identified as the man killed in a car accident earlier this week.
90-year-old Lynn Hulsey was struck by a pickup while stopped along Highway 60 just outside Panhandle Wednesday evening.
Hulsey coached and taught students all across the Panhandle for three decades. "He coached everything, football, basketball, track. One year he taught tennis and didn't know much about it, but they got him to do that," said his wife, Neida Hulsey.
Hulsey started coaching and teaching in Perryton back in 1949. He then moved on to Canyon, Vega and eventually became the principal of Panhandle High School. Neida Hulsey said it wasn't her husband's coaching that made a lasting impression on his students, but the way he spoke with them about life. "I think he was good for them. It seems like the people who were the worst, he could control. Not by whipping them, but by talking to them. He was real good about that."
Former Panhandle High School teacher Ann Metcalf agrees. "He would work with them, talk with them and just try and make them feel at ease and tell them what was really important in life, the importance of being a good person and having good character," said Metcalf.
Hulsey retired in 1979, but former students passing through Panhandle still stopped by to visit. "There's one girl who just loved him," said Neida. "She has a friend who lives in Colorado and she lives in Amarillo. Every time they get together, they came by here. They just had to see Coach Hulsey."
Coach Hulsey made an effort to see all his students too. "He went to reunions every place he ever taught. They made sure Coach Hulsey came," said Neida.
Hulsey was also the commander of Panhandle's VFW Post for thirty years and was involved in many other aspects of the community.
"I'm just going to miss the fella a lot," said Metcalf. "And he's going to be missed by the whole community."
