CHARLOTTE, NC : Driver killed after striking tractor trailer, crashing into tree and parked car in the 3700 block of The Plaza on Sunday, 5th August 2018

A driver was killed in a traffic accident involving a tractor trailer in east Charlotte early Sunday morning.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the incident happened in the 3700 block of The Plaza.

Around 1 a.m. officials said they responded to the scene of the wreck where they found a 2014 Volvo tractor trailer in the road that had been struck on the left side by a Ford Mustang.

Police said the Mustang kept moving after the initial collision and rolled into the front yard of of a home where it struck a tree and a parked 2013 Nissan Altima.

The Mustang driver was pronounced dead on scene by Medic.

Detectives were called to conduct the investigation and the North Carolina Highway Patrol was requested to conduct the inspection of the tractor and trailer.

The initial investigation determined that the Mustang was going northeast on The Plaza when it switched lanes then struck the side of the tractor trailer,

The truck driver immediately stopped after the collision, stayed on scene, was interviewed by detectives and screened for impairment. No impairment was detected.

Police say excessive speed and lack of seatbelt use are contributing factors of the crash for the Mustang driver.

The deceased driver was identified as 30-year-old Richard Andrew Brandon Cox.

The crash remains under investigation.
