Fairburn, GA : Police officer hit while investigating crash on I-85 on Tuesday morning, February 23, 2016

A Fairburn police officer is recovering in the hospital after being hit by a tractor-trailer on I-85 while investigating an unrelated traffic collision.

Local media outlets report that the crash occurred Tuesday morning. The officer was several hundred feet behind the crash to warn approaching drivers of the hazard.

The officer was suddenly hit from behind by a tractor-trailer. Fairburn police say in a Facebook post that the officer's vehicle was destroyed upon impact.

The officer is recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital. His identity is being withheld until his family can be notified.

The Fulton County Police Department is investigating the crash.
