Homer, AK : Sterling Highway reopens following accident on Wednesday, 24th February 2021

Lanes going in both directions near Mile 93 of Sterling Highway have reopened after a multi-vehicle accident caused the road to close on Wednesday.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Facebook page “KPB Alerts” posted that the highway was open as of 4:10 p.m.

At around 3 p.m. on Wednesday Alaska State Troopers in Soldotna advised people to avoid the area and said the road could take several hours to reopen.

According to Alaska 511, troopers confirmed a multi-vehicle accident at Mile 93 of the highway, near Mackey Lake Road.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District said in a press release at around 2:30 p.m. that afternoon travel and bus transportation would be delayed to the road closure.

According to the release, schools will remain open late on Wednesday and children who need to stay will be able to do so. Buses will run when the highway reopens and parents can pick their children up at school. Parents can contact individual schools for more details.

Schools impacted by bus transportation include River City Academy, Skyview Middle School, Soldotna Elementary School, Soldotna High School, Soldotna Montessori and Sterling Elementary. Additional area schools may be impacted even if they do not have bus routes that travel on the affected section of highway.
