Angleton, TX : Houston man dies after vehicle crashes into tree on Highway 288 near Angleton on Tuesday morning, October 18, 2016

A Houston man died Tuesday morning after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a tree on Highway 288 just outside Angleton city limits.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Stephen Woodard said the accident happened at 5:54 a.m. Tuesday when a 2006 Chevrolet Impala driven by 71-year-old Javier Calbera of Houston left the roadway and hit a tree.

“It was a one-vehicle crash,” he said. “The individual was driving traveling south on Highway 288 and crashed into a tree on the westbound side in a grassy bar ditch area.”

Calbera went by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, where he later was pronounced dead, Woodard said.

“We found some material that made it look like he was a contractor,” Woodard said. “We are still investigating to see if maybe he was fatigued or just distracted. Of course, at 5:45 in the morning, fatigue may be an issue because he literally just left the road way and crashed into a tree.”

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors at this time, Woodard said.

“It did shut down the road for a little bit,” he said. “It was just an unfortunate accident.”
