Anchorage, AL : Teen trapped, injured after vehicle crashes in Trapper Creek ravine on Monday, July 20th, 2015
Trapper Creek emergency responders rescued a teen trapped in a wrecked vehicle late Monday night, before he was flown to a Wasilla hospital for treatment of serious injuries sustained in the crash.
Alaska State Troopers said in a Tuesday dispatch that they received a 911 call at about 11:10 p.m. Monday reporting that 17-year-old Casey Cizek of Wasilla was “entrapped in a vehicle that had rolled down an approximate 100-foot embankment near Peter's Creek” at Mile 32.5 of Petersville Road.
“The caller stated Cizek was completely entrapped and had bone protruding from his leg,” troopers wrote. “Trapper Creek Rescue was notified and advised they would be responding by ATV due to washed-out road conditions in the area and (the 11th Air Force’s Rescue Coordination Center) was contacted to assist due to the reported terrain."
Numerous air and ground assets, including a LifeMed air ambulance and RCC aircraft from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson along with Trapper Creek Rescue members and troopers, responded to the scene.
“Once on scene Cizek was found alert and conscious with a compound fracture to his leg and broken ribs,” troopers wrote. “He had been able to crawl from his vehicle and was at the bottom of a very steep ravine. He had lost control of his vehicle while traveling to a gold mine in the area.”
Troopers said RCC and LifeMed staff landed nearby in their helicopters, and were able to hoist Cizek to the road with equipment from Trapper Creek Rescue. Cizek was transported on an ATV to a nearby helicopter, which took him to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
AST spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email that Cizek's crashed vehicle was a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. It wasn't immediately clear when Cizek had crashed, or how long he spent in the ravine before he was rescued.
