Pine City, MN : Woman dies in Hwy 70 crash on Friday September 23 2016
A Rush City woman was killed and two men were injured in a crash on Highway 70 this past Friday – and one of the drivers has been arrested for suspected drunk driving and criminal vehicular homicide.
The Minnesota State Patrol reports that at 1:34 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, a GMC pickup was heading east on Highway 70. The pickup was driven by Garret L. Stevens, 25, of Rush City with Mary D. Gonzalez, 47, of Rush City as a passenger.
As the pickup entered the intersection with County Road 23 it broadsided a Buick LeSabre driven by Austin M. Wolters, 23, of Janesville, Wisconsin, as that vehicle crossed Highway 70.
Gonzalez was killed in the crash. Both Stevens and Wolters received injuries that were described as non-life threatening by the Minnesota State Patrol.
Pine County and Chisago County deputies, the Minnesota State Patrol and other first responders arrived at the scene.
Law enforcement reported that they detected alcohol in Stevens’ system. No alcohol was detected in Wolters’ system.
Wolters was taken to Hayward Memorial Hospital, while Stevens was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
Stevens was arrested on Sept. 17 on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated and booked into Pine County Jail. Criminal charges had not been filed against him by the Pine County Attorney’s Office at press time.
