Gaston, OR : Possible drug OD call turns into crazy crash scene, deputy injured on Thursday, September 18, 2014
Law enforcement officers responding to the scene of a possible drug overdose became the targets of a man driving frantically away from his home, according to investigators.
The overdose was reported involving a 22-year-old man on the 47000 block of Southwest Fluke Drive near Gaston at 3 p.m. Thursday.
His parents got out of the house, but they said their son - later identified as Alexander Fastabend - remained inside and had set a small fire.
Deputies said the fire was quickly put out, but Fastabend jumped into a car and sped off down the driveway.
An Oregon State Police trooper tried to flag him down, but investigators said Fastabend attempted to run him over. The trooper managed to dive out of the way.
Fastabend is then accused of smashing head-on into a deputy's patrol car. That deputy was taken to the hospital with injuries described as minor.
Both cars ended up in a field.
Deputies said Fastabend ran into a corn field, then re-emerged carrying a large butcher knife. A stun gun was used to take him into custody.
Breanna Johnson-Wood, who owns the corn field, returned home to find her field had become a crime scene.
"It was a little unnerving coming home to find all these cop cars and a command center on my property," Johnson-Wood said.
Fastabend will be facing several felony charges, according to a Washington County Sheriff's Office spokesman.
