Greenville County deputies said a wrong-way driver crashed into a Highway Patrol vehicle trying to stop the driver early Monday morning.

Deputies said troopers initiated a rolling road block after learning that a car was driving northbound in the southbound lane of Interstate 85 between Pelham Rd and Highway 14.

As one trooper moved in to stop the vehicle, deputies said he was forced to swerve out of the way of the oncoming vehicle, which struck the trooper’s patrol car.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was determined to be an elderly man suffering from dementia. The man was not hurt but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The trooper was also unhurt.
