LAKE COUNTY, IN: Church bus driver arrested for OWI after Lake County crash near the Cline Avenue exit on Monday, 25th February 2019

An 82-year-old church bus driver was arrested Monday evening after crashing the bus into an embankment on the Toll Road.

The crash happened at around 10:30 p.m. near the Cline Avenue exit in Lake County. According to police, the bus driver, Wilton Carr, 82, drove into the gore area that separates the mainline road from the exit.

When that happened, the underbelly of the bus hit an embankment, causing the front tires to be knocked off the ground. That caused multiple people inside to be injured.

Five people were taken to the hospital for leg injuries and complaints of pain. The driver, Carr, was taken to the hospital and failed a certified test. He's facing several OWI charges.

The bus is owned by Jesus Saves Missionary Baptist Church in Gary. Its members were returning from an event at the United Center in Chicago.
