Milwaukee, WI : Young child celebrating birthday hit, killed by car near North 84th and West Marion streets early Saturday afternoon, August 6, 2016

A 3-year-old girl celebrating her birthday was hit and killed by a car early Saturday afternoon.

Jayda Handy ran into the roadway near North 84th and West Marion streets to greet her grandfather who was arriving to the party at about 2 p.m., police and family members said.

"All day she been wanting to have her party. All week she been singing happy birthday," her father, Jaylen Handy, said.

Despite the tragedy, family members continued to gather. They said that's what she would have wanted.

"I got the rest of my life to cry about it. She wanted her party today. ... That was my baby," Handy said.
