A St. Lucie County detention deputy on his way to work died in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 on Thursday, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said.Detention Deputy Alan Ross, a Port St. Lucie resident, was driving north on I-95 when his 2001 Nissan Frontier went off the roadway and struck a pole, authorities said. The crash happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. near mile marker 130, about a mile north of the Okeechobee Road exit.“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ross family and our sheriff’s office family during this tragic loss,” St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara said. “Sadly, we have lost another member of our sheriff’s office family.”Ross, 50, is the second St. Lucie County sheriff’s employee to die in uniform in the past two years.In 2013, Sgt. Gary Morales was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop south of Fort Pierce. Eriese Tisdale, of Fort Pierce, was later arrested in connection with the shooting. Tisdale pleaded not guilty and is still awaiting trial, court records show.
