Topeka, KS : No injuries in cross-over crash on I-70 just west of S.W. Valencia Road on Thursday monring, Oct 8, 2015

A one-vehicle, cross-over crash late Thursday morning on Interstate 70 west of Topeka resulted in no apparent injuries but slowed traffic in the area for more than an hour, authorities said.

The crash, which involved a large flatbed tow truck operated by Brown’s Super Service of Topeka, was reported at 11:52 a.m. just north of the westbound lanes of I-70, about a half-mile west of the S.W. Valencia Road exit.

Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Dennis Shoemaker said at the scene that the Brown’s tow truck had been traveling east on I-70 when apparently one of its front tires had a blowout.

Shoemaker said the truck then careened across a grassy median at a northeast angle then crossed both westbound lanes of traffic before it crashed through a guardrail. The tow truck then came to rest in the ditch on the north side of the four-lane interstate.

The truck’s driver reported he was a little “banged up” but otherwise was OK.

Another Brown’s Super Service tow truck was dispatched to the scene to pull the crashed unit out of the ditch.

Traffic on westbound I-70 was restricted to one lane while crews worked to clear the scene about five miles west of Topeka.

In addition to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Shawnee County Fire District 4 — located about a mile east of the crash scene at 315 S.W. Valencia Road, also responded to the crash.
