Ionia,MI : Ionia woman injured in 1-96 crash near Portland on April, Tuesday 17th 2018

An Ionia woman is in stable condition and recovering from injuries sustained this morning in an accident involving a semi-truck on I-96.

Eastbound I-96 in Ionia County was closed for several hours due to a two-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck Tuesday morning, April 17. According to WOOD-TV8, the crash happened around 4:45 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near Portland Road, exit 73, in Portland Township.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post said a semi-truck was heading eastbound when the driver began to slow down for traffic. The driver lost control, ran off the road and overturned. Another vehicle lost control then struck the trailer of the semi-truck.

The driver of the vehicle, a 53-year-old Ionia woman, was transported to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing with head injuries and was last reported to be in stable condition. The driver of the Herbruck Poultry Ranch semi-truck, a 54-year-old man from Portland, reported no injuries.

MSP investigators believe poor road conditions and excessive speed were factors in the crash. There were reports of several other crashes in the area around the same time.

The crash remains under investigation.

The highway was closed between the 73 and 76 mile marker for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene.

Assisting on scene were Ionia County Central Dispatch, Ionia County Sheriff’s Office, Berlin-Orange Fire Department, Portland Fire Department, Portland EMS, Ionia County Road Commission and Reed and Hoppes Towing.
